History
The story of T1 Diams roots back to the desperate need of the community of people with type 1 diabetes in the Republic of Mauritius. Indeed, facing a lack of infrastructure, education, and appropriate support of the management of their condition, an immense challenge presented itself. This story of dedication and perseverance starts in 2005, when the father of a baby recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, barely 18 months old, started a desperate quest to find adequate insulin for his son.
A lucky encounter with a pharmaceutical employee led to the conclusion that current treatment for T1D (Type 1 Diabetes) kids in Mauritius was not enough. Gathering their forces with dedicated parents and other people living with type 1 diabetes, they found T1 Diams’ first executive committee in 2006.
Nowadays, the association brings a renowned biopsychosocial support to people with type 1 diabetes across the Republic of Mauritius. T1 Diams welcomes their members in a dedicated support center in Quatre Bornes, with a dedicated staff who is trained notably at Reunion Island’s Children Hospital, and Bellepierre’s CHU, Reunion Island. T1 Diams is also a registered member of the SWEET Initiative and frequently participates in conferences organized by ISPAD (International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes).

Mission and Vision
T1 Diams’ mission is defined by our unwavering engagement towards improving the life of people living with type 1 diabetes across the Republic of Mauritius. Our objective is to care for the physical and mental health of our beneficiaries, which guarantees that their health is handled holistically.
However, our mission doesn’t stop here. We advocate with fervor for a better inclusion in society, fighting against taboos related to type 1 diabetes. Beyond medical support, we seek the emancipation of our beneficiaries, guiding them towards total autonomy. We believe that they are capable of blooming into fully capable and independent individuals, able to live a full life with type 1 diabetes.
Our mission also expands to education. We are dedicated to informing and educating families, relatives, friends, and communities, creating a common understanding of the condition, which is a crucial part of supporting those living with type 1 diabetes. To summarize, our mission goes beyond the simple management of the disease; we aspire to create a caring ecosystem, inclusive and educational, favorizing the health and wellbeing of those affected by type 1 diabetes in the Republic of Mauritius.

Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes mellitus is a complex condition of the metabolism that generally appears at a young age (although getting diagnosed as an adult is not impossible), leading to the body’s inability to produce insulin, an essential hormone for the management of blood sugar levels. If not treated, type 1 diabetes can be deadly.
Our approach – Beneficiaries
Living with type 1 diabetes in Mauritius comes to live in a specific environment to which we are required to constantly adapt as to always answer the specific needs of our beneficiaries optimally: children, teenagers, adults living with type 1 diabetes and their respective families. This represents a multifaceted challenge, asking for unique answers.
